Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to the E Street Surf School FAQ! Whether you’re a parent of a budding "grom," a local business looking to bond, or a surfer ready to catch your first wave at Jenness Beach or at "The Wall," we’ve got you covered.
Camps & Lessons
What is the youngest age a child can start surfing?
We’ve taught students as young as 4 years old! For children between the ages of 4 and 6, we require private one-on-one lessons. This ensures they have the dedicated, hands-on physical support and undivided attention necessary to stay safe and build confidence in the ocean.
Do I need to know how to swim?
The short answer is no. While being comfortable in the water is important, our beginner lessons are conducted in waist-deep water where you can easily stand. Because you are never in over your head, swimming is not strictly necessary to learn the basics.
What makes E Street different from other surf schools?
We believe in "Small Group by Design." While other schools may have high student-to-teacher ratios, we maintain a strict 3:1 ratio. This allows for more personalized coaching, more waves caught, and a much safer environment for every student.
What equipment will I need?
E Street Surf School provides a surfboard and a wetsuit for each and every student if needed. All you need to bring is a swimsuit, a towel, and some sunscreen!
What surf camp options do you offer?
We offer 5-day kids' surf camps and 2-day mini-camps. However, because we are family-owned and boutique, we are happy to customize any length day camp to fit your family's specific schedule or vacation dates.
What is the student-to-coach ratio?
We maintain a strict 3:1 ratio. We believe this is the industry gold standard for safety and rapid skill development. Small groups ensure you receive constant, real-time technical feedback and a significantly higher wave count than you would in a larger class.
Logistics & Location
Where should we meet for our lesson?
Most lessons start and finish at Common Roots in Rye, NH (2203 Ocean Boulevard). However, arrangements can be made to meet at 8th Street at "The Wall" in Hampton, NH provided that we know the student's height and weight in advance for proper wetsuit and board sizing.
Where do lessons take place?
Our primary location is just north of Jenness Beach in Rye, NH, known for its consistent sandy-bottom breaks and beginner-to-intermediate-friendly conditions. We also offer specialized sessions at "The Wall" in Hampton, NH, depending on swell conditions and skill levels.
Is there food and Wi-Fi available for parents?
Yes! Parents are welcome to hang out at Common Roots while lessons are in session. They offer free Wi-Fi and a delicious menu featuring smoothie bowls, fresh smoothies, sandwiches, fries, and more, plus great vegan options. Beer and wine are available for purchase to go for the adults.
What is the easiest way to get in touch during the summer?
The fastest way to reach us is by text at 603-770-5308. Cell signals can be spotty right on the beach, but texts almost always go through! You can also stop by the shop inside Common Roots to say hello.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Surfing is an all-weather sport, and we often surf in the rain. However, we monitor conditions closely. If there is lightning or if the surf is dangerously large or flat, we will contact you to reschedule your session for the safest and most productive window.
How far is E Street Surf School from Montreal?
